Haunted House Writing Fun!

Did you grab those cute spooky haunted house shape books from Target Dollar Spot?
I thought they would be the perfect opportunity for my kindergarteners to practice using sight words we have learned and how to construct a sentence!

My boys saw me making a sample and decided they wanted to make one too, so they got to work!

I created 2 versions because I have some students who might be able to handle 'sound spelling'

But most of my students will be using the word/picture strips so that the focus is on practicing sight words we have learned, finger spacing between words and constructing a sentence.

If you didn't grab them, you could always find a silhouette of a haunted house on Google Images and make multiple copies to staple together into a book form!

After reading a few 'haunted house' books you could use interactive writing to generate a list of what 'creatures' or objects may be in a haunted house.

Then have your students cut out the cover label and word/picture strips and/or large picture cards.
Here are 2 books I plan on using with my students.   I have read them to my boys and they love them!

Glue the cover label to the cover of the shape book and have them write their name on the line
(My son decided he wanted to add 'spooky' to the title!)

I included this as a 'title page' so to speak...

Write the sentence, glue the word/picture strip and then draw a picture to match.

Or have them use the large pictures and write their sentence to match

They could even use both the word/picture strips and the large pictures if you didn't want them to illustrate it on their own!

Working on 'speech bubbles?'  They can have their characters make a 'spooky' noise on each page!

If you students are up to the challenge, have them add their own creative spin on the extra pages (or throughout the book!)

So here are the options to offer your students with these books:

Just click the picture below to grab your free download!
(download does not include shape books)

But before you go....be sure to stop by on Thursday 10/27!  I am hosting a giveaway for this book:

It goes perfect with the Freaky Friday Week 5 DOLLAR DEAL I will be offering THIS FRIDAY, 10/28- Old Lady That Swallowed A Turkey Listening Response, Sequencing & Reader pack!

You get everything in this picture PLUS color versions of the reader and word/picture cards ALL FOR $1- but it's for ONE DAY ONLY- so you don't want to miss out!
In addition to my pack, there will be 40 other $1 deals for the final week of Freaky Friday 2016!

You can read more about this pack and how to find the $1 deal on this blog post that goes live at midnight on Thursday!

Have fun making some spook-tacular haunted houses and hope you stop by on Thursday to enter to win the free book (entry ends Saturday at 11:59pm) and Friday to grab your $1 deals!

Freaky Friday Dollar Deals...Week 4

It doesn't seem possible that we are already at Week 4 of Freaky Friday!
Hopefully you have been visiting each week and scoring lots of 'spook'-tacular resources to use with your students!
If you are new to visiting...WELCOME!  There are 2 weeks left (tomorrow and next Friday) left for you to grab dollar deals this October!

How do you go about finding the deals?

1. Click this image:

2. Use the linky at the bottom of this post to find all the participating stores!  Click the first link to ALL THE DEALS or click each individual seller to find what they are discounting for that day!

Some of the sellers are using Instagram to highlight their product and are using the hashtag #freakyfridaypegs
to link the deals together, but you won't find ALL the deals this way!

So what will you find from me this week?
A BRAND NEW PRODUCT for Election Day:

If you have used some of my other Early Emergent Reader Packs (as seen below)

you know that each pack comes with:
*an easy-to-prep book that has 'touch points' for students to touch which encourages 1:1 correspondence
*Word cards for sentence building in a pocket chart
*Word & Picture cards for sentence building in a pocket chart/aids reading of harder words

This pack has all of those components themed around Election Day!
Since this year everyone will be talking about the election, this pack provides a way to talk about it with your earliest readers!

Here is a glimpse of what is included:

(Election Day themed books included in the picture are not part of the download.)

And let's take a closer look!

Use the word and picture cards to build sentences the students will see in the book:

Build sentences for your students to read, or have them build it after hearing you dictate the sentence.

Provide all the word/picture cards to have students change out words to make new sentences

The pack provides a reading pointer 'topper' that matches the book's touch points.
Simply print it on cardstock (I chose red and blue to match the 'theme') and attach it to either a pencil, dowel, ruler/yardstick or even tape it on top of a pointer you already have for this activity!

Have students use the pointer when reading the sentences in the pocket chart.

After students have practiced reading/building the sentences in a pocket chart, have them work in their own books!

You can select any number of pages to include in your reader.  There are different options so you can customize the books to what you want to teach your students!

To assemble the books, simply print the pages you want to include in your book (you can even make different versions for differentiation/enrichment!)

Collate the pages and send them through your copier on the 'collate' 'staple 2 sides left' mode.
Once they are copied/stapled, use a paper cutter (or scissors) to cut the books in half and you have 2 'ready to read' books at your fingertips!

Distribute books and have students practice reading.  Encourage them to touch the 'touch points' to remember to point to words while reading!

Students can take the books home to read or have them keep the books in their book baggies for re-reading and fluency practice.  They can even be brought to a 'ready buddy' event, used in guided reading instruction and/or used as a literacy center activity the week leading to Election Day!

A fun follow-up activity would be to conduct a class vote!
Included in this
Election Day Classroom Pack is a ballot to use!

If you need another option for Election Day, be sure to check out this

If you are planning on talking about Election Day, this would be a great resource to begin discussions, cover vocabulary associated with Election Day and give your students reading practice!

Are you ready to find ALL THE DEALS for Week 4?

Hope you fill your bag with a lot of 'sweet treats!'
Be sure to check back next week for the final week of Freaky Friday for this October!

Freaky Friday...Week 3!

I hope you have been filling your 'bag of tricks' with tons of great dollar deals the past 2 weeks!
Freaky Friday is BACK for Week 3!
If you are new to 'Freaky Friday,' here is how it works...

There are over 40 sellers participating each week...they choose one item to discount to $1 for ONE DAY ONLY (regularly priced $2-$5).

How do you find all the deals for the week?

1. Click this image:

2. Use the linky at the bottom of this post to find all the participating stores!
You can click the first link to find a list of ALL THE DEALS or click each individual seller to find their discounted deal for the day!

Some of the sellers are using Instagram to highlight their product and are using the hashtag
to link the deals together, but your won't find ALL of the deals that way.

So what will you find from me this week?
A BRAND NEW PRODUCT...

If you have used my Fall, Winter Holidays, Winter, Spring or Generic Sets of puzzles, you know how these work!
If not, you can find them on several of my blog posts HERE or see the pictures below.

The pack comes with 12 Halloween themed puzzles.
There are 3 for 2-letter words, 3 for 3-letter words, 3 for 4-letter words and 3 for 5-letter words.

It is 'ready to go' with puzzles using 12 words from the Pre-Primer Dolch Word List and ALSO has an editable set of puzzles so that you can make additional puzzles using words you are working on, spelling words and/or cvc or cvce word building using the 3 & 4 letter templates!

The directions on how to edit are included in the pack and there are 2 ways you can go about editing!

Once you have the word you want students to practice, simply print and copy the puzzles.

Students then cut the pieces on the dotted lines:

And then arrange them to spell the word:

After they check to make sure they are right, they glue the pieces and then practice writing the word:

From there they can color the puzzle:

Students can use the word in a sentence on the back for added practice and enrichment.
They can also build the word using magnetic letters that they match to the puzzle for added support and practice!

The puzzles also come in full color so that you can make puzzles for students to practice building with either before or after they complete their own puzzles!

I do have a few Halloween puzzles in my
but made sure not to use any of the same images as those that are in the Fall set!

All the puzzles only use 1 piece of paper- yet students practice building, writing, reading and using their sight word!
My students use sight word puzzles all year long as one of our 'staple' centers.

Are you ready to find ALL THE DEALS for Week 3?

Hope you fill your treat bag up with lots of 'sweet' deals!
Don't forget to stop by next week to see what Week 4 will bring!
